Project Description
Neno District is situated within an extremely rural region in Southern Malawi. Beginning in 2007, Partners in Health has come to serve 7,100 HIV-positive patients -approximately 75% of all HIV cases in the district. Until 2014, noncommunicable diseases were under addressed within Neno District. Strategic leveraging of the existing capacity for HIV care has given rise to an Integrated Chronic Care program, which seeks to address conditions ranging from HIV to hypertensions, diabetes, asthma, and mental illness. The program allows for holistic care of patients despite scarcity of resources.
To assist in bolstering the Integrated Chronic Care program, BHI has collaborated with Partners in Health and Neno District Hospital on an abbreviated master plan for expansion of the hospital, which includes the construction of a new outpatient department, integrated chronic care clinic (IC3), pharmacy, and various ancillary services. Phase 1 of the Master Plan, construction of the IC3, is currently underway following architecture and engineering services completed by BHI.
