COVID-19 Treatment Center

Project Introduction

Recognizing the significant constraints of the health system in Haiti’s Southern Peninsula, BHI began working to scale-up St. Boniface Hopital’s COVID-19 infrastructure before Haiti even recorded it’s first case of the virus. Now, Saint Boniface Hospital has a new 50-bed COVID-19 Treatment Center, with a triage area, two wards, and isolation rooms.

Project Description

In late-March 2020, BHI broke ground on a new COVID-19 treatment center with two wards, a covered triage area, a sanitation block, and a small morgue. A passive airflow design and mechanical ventilation from fans enable the wards to meet the WHO-recommended 12 air changes per hour to mitigate spread of infection. BHI also supported Saint Boniface Hospital to restructure clinical flows in the Center for Infectious Disease and Emergency Care (CIDEC), such that the CIDEC’s isolation wards and isolation rooms can now be used to safely treat high-acuity COVID-19 patients. In total, BHI was able to add an additional 50 COVID-19 beds to Saint Boniface Hospital.

BHI has also been supplying the St. Boniface Hospital treatment center with critical biomedical equipment and furnishings, including hospital beds, IV poles, oxygen regulators, pulse oximeters, and vital sign monitors. BHI also partnered with Direct Relief to supply a total of 65 bedside oxygen concentrators to St. Boniface Hospital.
