AGC MA Features BHI and Turner Construction on Sustainability Matters Podcast

Build Health International Project Manager Alexandra Best spoke with Kyle Gillen and Dylan Malm of Turner Construction on the AGC MA Podcast Network’s Sustainability Matters series.

“Koidu Government Hospital is the only specialized hospital [in Kono]. What that means in the context of where we’re building is that they have [limited] electricity and water. As we build the infrastructure, obviously, you have to think about the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing that has to be upgraded with it. What we’re doing right now is an electrical infrastructure upgrade across the whole campus.” – Alexandra Best

Build Health International Project Manager Alexandra Best joined Kyle Gillen and Dylan Malm of Turner Construction to talk about the unique challenges and sustainable solutions behind the campus development of Koidu Government Hospital in Kono, Sierra Leone. From commercial-grade washers and dryers that replace hand-washing laundry to addressing electrical infrastructure upgrades for reliable, 24-hour power and water, Alexandra shares how every detail supports a system where quality care can thrive.

The episode also explores BHI and Turner Construction’s partnership to reduce material waste—repurposing attic stock and reclaimed demo like solid wood doors from Turner to use in hospitals across the globe. Alexandra touches on training local tradespeople, women-led labor teams, and the complex logistics of shipping 40-foot containers from Gloucester, Massachusetts to Kono, Sierra Leone.
