Project Description
BHI’s support to Kyrgyzstan has been driven by an accelerated timeline and close, effective collaboration. The BHI team received a request to travel to Kyrgyzstan in January 2024 in order to help expedite the development of technical specifications for an oxygen plant in the city of Nookat. Following the site assessment visit, BHI produced a number of deliverables needed by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) team to quickly move forward with the oxygen plant project.
BHI flagged key sustainability considerations early, noting the need for Nookat Hospital to procure essential oxygen cylinder and oxygen pipeline accessories before the oxygen plant arrived. BHI continued to support UNDP throughout the procurement and site preparation process, providing key electrical designs when electrical engineering support was requested. BHI provided technical assistance to UNDP during communications with the oxygen plant supplier, including the supplier and UNDP with a checklist that could be used during the commissioning of the oxygen plant to ensure the plant was positioned for long-term success.
UNDP requested Management Training from BHI prior to the oxygen plant’s arrival, in order to have time to implement key administrative lessons for the incoming oxygen plant. During this visit, BHI’s technical expertise was leveraged with visits to two existing oxygen plants in the country. BHI assessed the two existing plants and provided detailed recommendations for repairing or replacing these systems. Ahead of the new oxygen plant’s commissioning, BHI was invited back to Kyrgyzstan to provide technical Maintenance Training to oxygen plant operators and biomedical technicians. After providing training and assessing the new plant installation in August 2025, BHI remains engaged remotely with UNDP and plant operators to provide commissioning and sustainability support.
