Autodesk Design & Make Features BHI: Gender Equity in Construction

Female electricians work on wiring at the MCOE

Matt Alderton recently featured BHI on the Autodesk Design & Make publication, titled “In Africa, gender equity in construction shapes the workforce of the future.” The publication (formerly known as Redshift) publication “stands at the forefront of digital transformation in the architecture, construction, infrastructure, manufacturing, and media and entertainment industries.”

BHI’s Maternal Center of Excellence design and build project was featured alongside B-Corp BuildX and peer nonprofit MASS Design Group. In the article, Alderton speaks to both the gender inequities and progress towards gender equity in Sierra Leone. He then quotes MCOE site supervisor John Chew on why he chose to hire majority woman at the MCOE to close the gaps in the country’s construction and contractor labor force. Chew says, “I’m very partial to women because I have 10 sisters. I’m here today because of them. They taught me everything I know and raised me to be the man I am today. I’ve never this many women do construction, and they’re really doing a good job at it.”
