New research from Regan H. Marsh, Kristin D. Chalmers, et. al. published in the Annals of Global Health presents Emergency Department (ED) design recommendations for Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), based on the authors’ experience designing and operating the ED at Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais (HUM), an academic hospital in central Haiti. BHI co-founders designed and built the first emergency department during the initial construction of HUM in the wake of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Build Health International has coordinated subsequent expansions of the ED, and are currently completing construction on the expanded ED, as featured in the article. The authors, including BHI co-founder Jim Ansara, concluded that ED design in LMICs must balance construction costs, sustainability in the local context, and the impacts of physical infrastructure on care delivery.
