Build Health International
Project Introduction
Recently, BHI completed a campus assessment of the CURE International Children’s Hospital in Ethiopia. Our team analyzed their current surgical capacity and calculated what changes and additions would be necessary in order to accommodate the fast growth in the need for pediatric surgery.

Project Description
With the number of children with physical deformities such as cleft lip or club foot seeking surgery at their Children’s Hospital in Addis Ababa rapidly growing, CURE International set the ambitious goal of doubling the amount of surgeries completed on their campus to over 5,000 annually. It was clear that BHI was the best team to carefully consider this challenging expansion. Our experienced team of architects and engineers determined that four additional operating rooms, plus two support spaces and other necessary features, would be required. Additionally, we have conceptualized the feasibility of growth within the campus’ geographical shortcomings, such as a lack of land and location on a steep hill; this design will serve as a model for the future. The impact of the partnership between CURE and BHI is clearly exemplified by the nearly 10,000 annual outpatient visits and over 2,700 annual procedures with surgical specialities of orthopedics and plastics - and we expect these numbers to grow dramatically upon completion of the expansion.
